Butaleja Dental Mission – July 2013

This is a brief report on the July Butaleja CMM mission.
The theme of our mission was “Dental Outreach” with the intention to use this approach to communicate God’s love to people in Butaleja and areas nearby.
The activities involved – treating and pulling out bad teeth, sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ verbally, counseling and praying with individuals, ministering to school and community children, and visiting prisons. The team also gave some items like Colgate, toothbrushes, and clothes to everyone who came for the treatment. In the prisons, the team purchased some food and “sodas” for the prisoners and their warders. Shared the Gospel and also encouraged those who were already born again.

With the Dental outreach, 322 people were treated in three days. And more than eighty people gave their lives to Jesus Christ. To our surprise, we did not have to speak so many words to convince people to accept Jesus as Lord, they just came to us asking for prayers to “get saved” as a result of what they had witnessed.
Some people confessed to having tooth problems (pains) for more than two years but could not afford to pay for the treatment of getting the bad teeth pulled out. Some confessed this in tears, but tears of joy!!
This is the power of the “Two handed Gospel” that CMM is using this as a model to the churches – doing open air meetings complimented with good works.

The team visited a few local churches which they had visited at the first Butaleja outreach over New Years 2012.
The children’s ministries have always been fun and very fruitful. Many kids turned up and spent almost a whole day at the grounds where we did the dental outreaches.

Douglas – One of CMM’s Sponsored Children

Douglas is a Ugandan boy, age 9, who is blind. Dan Muwanguzi met Douglas at one of the churches that Dan speaks at from time to time, and Douglas was attending the Sunday school. Douglas was cheerful and engaging with Dan, and Dan’s heart went out to Douglas and his situation.

Douglas father abandoned Douglas because he was blind, and his mother is very poor. As such, Douglas was not getting schooling and growing up blind and uneducated is not good, especially in Uganda.

Through Christian Model Ministries and their sponsors, recently Dan was able to place Douglas into Salaama School for the Blind 2 months ago.

Recently, Joshua Bumba, a team member of Christian Model Ministries, who co-leads their child schooling program, was able to visit Douglas at Salaama and visit with Douglas’ mother.

The reports we received from Douglas’ teachers were very encouraging. He is only 9 years and has never been away from his mother and relatives. This school “Salaama School of the Blind” is 3 hours journey on private transport from Douglas home. The most exciting thing was to know that Douglas has been among the best students in his class!

The teachers say that he has caught up with school life very first, he loves and mixes very well with his school mates, always happy and smiling. We at CMM are so grateful to God for Douglas.

Two of his relatives including his mother have now excepted the Lord as a result of seeing Douglas miraculously joining the school, this was like a dream to Douglas’ Mom and other relatives given the cost of taking such a blind boy to Salaama.

CMM Mid Year 2013 Update

Dan Muwanguzi and his CMM team have been very busy so far in 2013.
Here is their mid year update:
  1. The CMM team was in Butaleja when the year started. And we had a very successful/ fruitful Mega mission (Crusade). We witnessed more than 170  people give their lives to the Lord. We prayed with many people. Baptized some of the new believers, ministered and gave gifts to kids, visited and gave gifts to those in prison and hospitals. Taught Pastors and church leaders in a seminar..
  2. CMM has set up the new head office. Set up an accounts team, holding prayers and discussion meetings once a week.
  3. The C-TBS – Bible training class to remote pastors in Uganda – has been running since March and will go on until the end of October. We have received very positive and encouraging feedback from the students. Many say that they did not know how little they new their Bibles before they came to this course.
  4. Since April, we have had CMM team members visit hospitals and prisons twice a week. Many people have given their lives to Christ, and many sick have received prayers and encouragement. And to some we have given practical help like food, helping wash cloth for the helpless sick people. The local police nearby our home area are so proud of CMM visitations and they have appreciated our input to the prisoners having noticed changes into those that give their lives to Christ.
  5. CMM has continued to pay school fees and provide some scholastic materials to school kids in Karamoja, Kabong, and Gulu areas. Also sharing the Gospel in those areas, and helping treat Jiggers etc in Karamoja and giving out clothes to needy people.
  6. Douglas (a blind young man) whom CMM has now taken to the Blind school. Douglas’ testimony has touched not only his relatives but also some community members who had seen him very helpless in the past, having been denied by his Dad. His mother, without a job, was also helpless. Now Douglas has joined one of the most recommended blinds school in Uganda. Him, his mother, and other relatives are excited and so thankful for such provision to such a boy.
  7. CMM has done one major school crusade (outreach) where over forty secondary school pupils gave their lives to Christ.
  8. Visited and encouraged two “Scripture unions” in two secondary schools.
  9. Dan has taught two YWAM DTSes twice for a week during each visit (YWAM Soroti and YWAM Arua).
  10. Today, The CMM team is leaving for a Dental/ Followup mission in Butaleja. We will be treating  pulling out bad tooth, as a means to share Gods love with the community. Again we will visit some of the churches we visited previously as a means to followup on those that gave their lives to Christ and to encourage the churches. We will send teams to prisons, hospitals and school. Minister to children and distribute gifts (Mostly cloth) that we have gathered for some time.
  11. Since this year started, we have registered over 470 people that have given their lives to Christ though our missions. And we are so grateful to the Lord fo all that he has done and what he continues to do.

Further, remaining items for Christian Model Ministries to accomplish this year include:
  1. Restart the Hair dressing classes in August.
  2. Continue with the weekly visits in hospitals and prisons.
  3. Continue running the C-TBS Bible class up to  end of October 2013.
  4. We have planned an  evangelistic  crusade for the whole school in one of the secondary schools that we usually visit
  5. A team will be visiting Karamoja / Northern Uganda late August, to check on the CMM sponsored children, their status and schooling, and check-in with their teachers, and parents if the children aren’t orphans.
  6. We will be providing the third term school fees, scholastic materials, and take some gifts and supplies to the people of Northern Uganda whose conditions are still very difficult and impoverished.
  7. Dan will be visiting Australia later this year giving the update on the C-TBS program. Supporters in Australia have been key to supporting Dan and helping get the C-TBS program off the ground. Dan will be formally introducing them to Christian Model Ministries at this time.

Caring for and Educating Children and Orphans in Uganda

Uganda has a population of over 34 Million people, and half of those are children under 14 years. Over 2 million of these children are orphans, and many more stay with their jobless parents, grandparents, or single mothers.
But also in Uganda, we also have situations where both parents are alive but cannot afford to educate their children, some are born in polygamous and very large families where by the parents income cannot meet the children’s basic needs.

CMM cares for children and helps pay for their school fees in Northern Uganda, Gullu, Karamojja, and some in the central region. We now have 48 children in remote regions of Uganda where we are helping with their school fees. As a model, each CMM member takes on one child to to support. And during the recent years, other local Christian members have been voluntarily joining by supporting a child with school fees.

In Uganda, when parents die, their children are too great a burden for extended family to carry. Relatives already struggle to provide for their own. As a result, the children are farmed out to different family members in diverse locations. Therefore, an orphaned child loses not only his parents, but often his siblings as well. Some are treated poorly by resentful relatives. Others try to survive on the streets. In all respects, they are outcasts.
God is the father to the fatherless – Psalms 68:5. The application of such a scripture is “The body of Christ is the father to the fatherless”. CMM has taken on parenting and educating children as one of the pillars in discipling the nation of Uganda and East Africa.

CMM has a call and interest to minister to children. Children ministry and outreach is one of our core focuses, and we visit and share the Gospel in primary and secondary schools, teaching in children Sunday Schools. Collect some cloth and other basic needs that we usually supply to kids in need. CMM leaders, like Mr Byamugisha and Miss Kalembe travel to northern and rural parts of Uganda, checking on children under CMM’s care and helping out as able.

CMM has the vision to provide a home, education, parenting, and all other basic physical and spiritual needs for orphans and impoverished children in Uganda. If the Lord allows and the provisions come in, this programme will start early next year.

Dan Muwanguzi’s Teaching the Bible in Mukono

Update on the Church Based Training in Biblical Studies (C-TBS) – in Mukono DC Church

We do have a very impressive class of 19 people all together. This includes the senior Pastor of that Church and key leaders of different ministries. They come from 3 different churches but mostly from Mukono DC.

This church is involved in many different types of Ministries and outreaches in the Mukono community and the nearby areas. The church is so much committed to studying the word and prayer. Deliverance church is one of the Churches in Uganda that has for a long time maintained a very good reputation, building their ministry on team work, Godliness and with a strong emphasis on the “Word of God”.

Our role as C-TBS is to be part of what the Lord is doing in Mukono and the nearby areas as we influence those key ministry leaders through the Bible training course.

We do have a very good and enthusiastic bunch of participants. They are faster in learning the Bible study principles.

We are also learning a lot from them as we conduct this course.

The Pastor, “FRED SSALI” has been so supportive and has encouraged us a lot with his praises for this course.We thank the Lord that he has given us the leaders in his church to be in our class this year and we look forward to more excitement, learning and hearing from the Lord as we continue.

Since we started, Andrew Kiwanuka and my self have been the main facilitators, Andrew is the Director for the SBS in YWAM Uganda and we always work together in both programs. The assistant Pastor Peter Sekatawa is a former SBS Student. He was one of our students some time back, now he is the assistant pastor in the DC church and an overseer of other sister churches. Peter is a very good Bible teacher and he is part of our current teaching team in this school.

We are so grateful to the Lord for the prayers, encouragement and financial help that enables us to keep this and other Christian Model Ministry programs running smoothly.

Dan Muwanguzi’s Teaching at YWAM Soroti

I hope that you have a good, blessed, and relaxed Easter.

I was invited to lecture at YWAM Soroti, Eastern Uganda, where I was the “Base Coordinator” in the year 1997. I taught for a week on the Subject of Rejection, Acceptance, and the Cross. Since I left YWAM, this has been the subject I get invited to teach in the Discipleship Training School (DTS) and it has always been good to see the hand of God moving in the classes I teach on this topic.

This time, having been away from the YWAM base for a long time turned the trip into an adventure. First of all, the journey from Kampala to Soroti had to take 10 hours, which is twice as much as it used to. This time one of the roads we took was very dusty and bumpy and twice, i had to sit for over an hour to wait for the bus to fill up before we got going. I finally got to Soroti YWAM Base with a lot of dust picked along the long drive but with a lot of excitement to be back to “My base” and to be part of what the Lord is doing in the present DTS.

The teaching went on very well.

REJECTION -> many of us in Africa have gone through lots of “Rejection” experiences in the past.

I grew up in a very poor family and having dropped out school in year nine brought lots of problems to me that I almost considered death as an option. The Lord had to teach me a lot to get out of the past and pursue the future in Christ.

Each student had a testimony to give, There was healing, forgiving and receiving forgiveness, to parents, teachers, authority figures etc and it was an encouraging week.

Church-Based Training in Biblical Studies (C-TBS) in Mukono Uganda March 9th

Greetings Friends,

On a recent Skype call I had to Uganda, Dan walked me through his plans to kick-off their Church-based Training in Biblical Studies (C-TBS) for 2013. This Bible Training fulfills a big need in many Ugandan and East African churches, as often pastors have limited Bible training yet are leading large congregations in remote regions.

Dan has been teaching the Bible for over 20 years, and this ministry is the central focus of the work Christian Model Ministries does. Every year, Dan and his team pray and pick a new rural location in Uganda, and in 2013 they will providing 8 months of Bible training to ministers and other Christians in the city of Mukono Uganda.

Mukono is a rural area in Central Uganda, roughly 2 hours travel from Kampala.

The CMM Team is currently preparing for C-TBS orientation with the students, doing enrollment admin work, syllabus review, much prayer, and the purchase of certain things like Bibles. Dan will lead the first 3 weeks of the Bible training, using the inductive method, and the teaching sessions will be held at Deliverance Church in Mukono.

Other C-TBS teachers include Edward and Godfrey (leaders at CMM), as well as colleagues and theologians from other Ugandan churches and YWAM.

C-TBS does lectures once or twice a week, every Saturdays from 9 to 1pm, and sometimes Thursday evenings doing questions, answers, and support. Students have assignments focused on a particular book in the Bible, and hand in assignments weekly on Saturday mornings. Dan reviews and comments on all assignments.

The students are mostly pastors and Christians who have full-time jobs, families to support, and so it is a real blessing to get affordable high quality inductive Bible training brought to their cities and villages. These students can not afford the money and time cost to leave their work and families to get Bible training at a Bible College or Seminary. Students commit to 1.5 hours every day of Bible study and course work.

Dan said “It is one of the cities in Uganda which is growing very fast. It has many bad things happening within the community and the Mukono church needs much support.”

Princess is Born to Dan and Miriam

Greetings Friends,
As many of you might know, Dan and Miriam had a new little girl, Princess on January 2nd 2013. She is now 1 month and 3 weeks old, and is gaining some weight and sleeping through the night, to the delight of Miriam.
The birth was complicated as Miriam had Malaria, and so had extended hospital stay with intravenous drugs. She also had a cesarean, but now Miriam is doing well and regaining her strength.
This winter was a trying time for Dan and his family, especially as Dan had a significant ministry crusade to lead and run. But God has been gracious, and now they have a fourth addition to their family, the sweet like Princess.

The boys are very happy to have a new little sister. I got to hear Princess’ little cries on a recent Skype chat with Dan in Uganda.

Christian Model Ministries 2013 Year Plan

Rural Pastor Bible Training, Uganda Outreach, Youth Vocation, and Children Education Ministries

In Mid January, Dan and the Christian Model Ministries team met to pray, discuss, and plan initiatives for 2013.

I look forward to providing updates on the CMM website to what the Lord is accomplishing in Uganda / East Africa through the work of Christian Model Ministries.

Here is the CMM top 10 initiatives for 2013:

  1. Run the Church-based Training in Bible Studies (C-TBS) from March to October 2013. NOTE – This is a big focus of CMM, a big need in the Ugandan church, and Dan’s calling. The C-TBS provides sound Bible training to rural Christian pastors in the countryside of Uganda.
  2. In July, follow up to the big Butaleja New Years crusade, including:
    – Dental outreach in Butaleja (Eastern Uganda).
    – Church followup programs in Butaleja. The CMM team will visit and encourage each of  the 13 local churches that CMM works with to run the Mega missions.
  3. Ministry to Karamojja / Gulu – to record information (profiles) from the school kids that CMM supports and pays school fees for. Visit and minister to Churches we work with.
  4. Dental outreach in Rukunjiri (Western Uganda). Dan: “We treat and pull out bad teeth. And share the Love of God (Gospel) with the local community.”
  5. A number of school outreaches. These are yet to be clearly arranged but we visit three schools regularly to encourage the born again school kids and teachers through the year.
  6. Prison outreaches, one every two months.
  7. VTS (Vocational Training School) receives new students in April that will run up to April 2014.
  8. Complete the Christian Model Ministry’s office by purchasing some remaining office equipment.
  9. Financial controls and bookkeeping systems. Dan has assembled a financial team who will be providing bookkeeping accountability on a quarterly basis.
  10. Any many other things as the Lord may guide us through t the year.

Dan and the CMM team have big vision for what the Lord can accomplish through them in 2013.

Pray for Dan, the Christian Model Ministries team, their outreaches and ministry, God’s provision and protection, and for the young children in Uganda and East Africa that have many needs.

New Year 2012 Crusade to Butaleja Uganda

To bring in the New Year, Dan and his Christian Model Ministries team have been planning and preparing for a big ministry training and outreach program. When Dan was in Victoria he was explaining the concept to me, and had dubbed it a MEGA CRUSADE.

Essentially, the concept was from December 28th to the 31st 2012, in the mornings, Dan and his team would be teaching and organizing local pastors and other Christians, and then during the day they would be doing outreach to schools, hospitals, and prisons. This would then culminate with an all night worship service December 31st, ushering in the New Year.

The crusade was in Butaleja District of Uganda, which is a very remote district in Eastern Uganda near Kenya. Travel to Butaleja from Kompala takes many hours, through windy roads, fields, and the outback of Uganda.

In Butaleja, there were many young children, and so the New Years crusade engaged and ministered to the young children there.

A big focus of the work was open air crusades in Butaleja.

One of the chief aims in the outreaches was giving individuals an opportunity to minister as part of their training. This was an answer to prayer as many young ministers became leaders and engaged in the crusades with vigor and passion.

Much pray and planning lead to success.

The Christian Model Ministries had brought clothe supplies, for distribution to the needy in Butaleja.

Many kids came to listen to the Gospel and to receive some cloth. And many gave their lives to Jesus during the days CMM ministered in Butaleja.

According to Dan Muwanguzi:

“We prayed and discussed a lot regarding the team unity. We kept like 10 people in one room because we don’t have big accommodation. We did the cooking, fetched water a distance of one kilometer on foot with jerrycans, we cut the fire wood for cooking, we were more than 40 people, but … we use one latrine and one bathroom . It is basically more like Ugandan camping life. Despite all those, God kept our team together with vision and passion.“

“We all woke up as team at 5.00 a.m and had one and a half hours of prayer, communication, and planning each morning.  Then we all went for different work duties until  8.30am. We then took breakfast and left our location by 10.00 am for different ministries. Came back for lunch at 1.00 pm them went for afternoon ministries including the crusade by 3.00 pm. Then we came home at 8.00 pm , had dinner. Lights (Candles) out by 10.00.”

Each day, in preparation for outreach, the CMM team would teach local ministers and Christians.

Overall, God blessed Christian Model Ministries efforts. New converts were introduced to local churches.

The Christian Model Ministries is planning to return to Butaleja in July of 2013, with a principal aim of connecting with the new converts and to continue the work they started here this New Years.

The MEGA CRUSADE ended with an all night celebration of Jesus Christ.
